Persicaria praetermissa

Persicaria praetermissa, also known as Polygonum praetermissum and formerly introduced to the aquarium hobby as Polygonum sp. ‘Ruby’, is an attractive aquatic stem plant from the Polygonaceae family. Native to tropical regions of Asia and Australia, it naturally grows in marshy areas and along streams and can thrive both submerged and emersed.

One of its most distinctive features is its unusual hastate (arrow-shaped) leaves. When grown underwater with suitable conditions, the leaves can develop attractive reddish to dark tones, adding strong visual contrast to a planted aquarium.

Growth & Aquarium Requirements

Persicaria praetermissa has a distinctive partly horizontal growth habit, making it different from many traditional stem plants. It is relatively easy to grow, although medium to strong aquarium lighting, sufficient nutrients, and a good CO₂ supply will help encourage healthier growth and stronger coloration.

Under good conditions, this plant can grow relatively quickly and is easy to propagate from stem cuttings. Simply cut a healthy section of the stem and replant it into the substrate to produce new growth.

Aquascaping Uses

With its horizontal growth pattern, unique leaf shape, and dark reddish coloration, Persicaria praetermissa makes an excellent accent plant for the midground of a planted aquarium. Its darker tones contrast particularly well with light-green and finely textured aquatic plants.
