Anubias gilletii

Anubias gilletii is a beautiful, robust, and slow-growing aquarium plant from the Araceae family, naturally found in rainforest regions of West and Central Africa, including Nigeria, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In nature, it grows along river edges and can also grow partially submerged underwater.

Known for its hardiness and relatively undemanding nature, Anubias gilletii is a great choice for aquariums, planted tanks, and rainforest-style paludariums. It can tolerate a wide range of water conditions and generally grows well under low to medium lighting, although medium light can encourage stronger growth.

Appearance & Growth

Anubias gilletii can become a relatively large Anubias species. When grown terrestrially, it can reach heights of more than 40 cm, while submerged plants usually remain smaller.

Young plants typically develop lance-shaped leaves, which can resemble narrow-leaved varieties of Anubias barteri. As the plant matures, its leaves can develop a distinctive hastate shape with lobes near the base, giving mature plants an attractive and unique appearance.

Its slow growth makes it easy to maintain and helps create a natural, long-lasting appearance in an aquarium.

How to Plant Anubias gilletii

Like other Anubias species, Anubias gilletii should not have its rhizome buried under the substrate. Instead, attach the plant to aquarium rocks, driftwood, or other hardscape using suitable aquarium-safe methods.

The plant can be propagated relatively easily by dividing the rhizome, allowing you to grow multiple plants from a healthy established specimen.

Lighting & Water Parameters

Anubias gilletii is not particularly demanding and can adapt to a variety of aquarium conditions. It generally performs well under low to medium light and prefers stable water conditions.
