Vallisneria Gigantea

Vallisneria Gigantea – Easy & Fast-Growing Background Aquarium Plant

Vallisneria Gigantea is a large, attractive aquatic plant that is ideal for creating a lush, jungle-like background in freshwater aquariums. As one of the larger Vallisneria varieties, it produces long, grass-like green leaves that can grow rapidly and reach the surface of the aquarium.

This easy-care aquarium plant is particularly suitable for large tanks and is a great choice for beginners as well as experienced aquascapers. Its tall leaves create a natural background while providing shelter and hiding areas for fish and other aquatic animals.

Fast Growth & Easy Propagation

Vallisneria Gigantea spreads naturally through runners and side shoots, allowing a small group of plants to gradually develop into a dense underwater forest. Growth is especially vigorous when the substrate contains sufficient nutrients.

The leaves can reach approximately 50–150 cm in length and around 2 cm in width. Because the leaves may grow across the water surface, occasional trimming is recommended to prevent them from blocking too much light from reaching shorter aquarium plants.

The leaves are relatively tough and strong, making Vallisneria Gigantea less likely to be damaged or eaten by many herbivorous fish.

Planting & Care

Plant Vallisneria Gigantea directly into the aquarium substrate and allow its roots to establish deeply. A nutrient-rich substrate can encourage stronger root development and faster propagation.

Avoid burying the crown of the plant too deeply, as this can interfere with healthy growth. Once established, the plant can spread naturally through runners and produce new plants around the original planting area.
