Echinodorus cordifolius – Creeping Burhead
Echinodorus cordifolius, commonly known as Creeping Burhead or Radican Sword, is a classic aquatic plant from the Alismataceae family. It is a highly variable species naturally distributed from the southern and eastern United States through Central America to South America. It is one of the older and well-known plants used in the aquarium hobby.
Echinodorus cordifolius naturally grows in marshes, ponds, wetlands, and shallow areas along lakeshores, where it can grow either partially submerged or emersed. Depending on the population, the plant can develop broad, heart-shaped leaves or narrower oval to lance-shaped leaves.
Echinodorus cordifolius for Aquariums
When grown underwater, Echinodorus cordifolius can provide attractive green foliage and a natural appearance in planted aquariums. However, its growth habit can vary considerably between different forms of the species.
Under strong lighting, long daylight periods, and abundant nutrients, some forms may quickly produce long-stemmed floating or aerial leaves while older submerged leaves gradually deteriorate. These forms are better suited to open-top aquariums or emersed cultivation.
Other aquarium-adapted forms can remain submerged for considerably longer. To encourage submerged growth, it is recommended to provide a suitable photoperiod, avoid excessively long lighting periods, and remove leaves that begin growing above the water surface.
The plant can also produce flower stalks with adventitious plantlets, particularly when cultivated emersed. These young plants can develop into new specimens under suitable growing conditions.
Growth & Identification
Echinodorus cordifolius is sometimes confused with closely related Echinodorus species, including Echinodorus floribundus. The species can be identified by characteristics such as its flower stalk development, peduncles, and the distinctive translucent patterns visible within its leaves.
Because Echinodorus cordifolius is naturally variable, the appearance and aquarium growth behaviour can differ between individual plants.
