Amazon Sword – Easy-Care Aquarium Plant

The Amazon Sword is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly aquarium plants, well known for its attractive appearance, easy care requirements, and ability to create a lush natural look in planted aquariums. With its long, broad green leaves and rosette growth pattern, this aquatic plant is an excellent choice for creating an attractive background or focal area in an aquascape.

Amazon Sword plants develop from a short central stem and produce long, oval-shaped leaves with pointed tips. Depending on growing conditions, the leaves can range from bright green to deep green and often feature prominent veins with a slightly wavy appearance. As the plant matures, it can grow quite large, making it particularly suitable for medium to large aquariums.

Growing & Care

Amazon Sword is relatively easy to maintain and can adapt to a wide range of aquarium conditions. A nutrient-rich aquarium substrate is highly recommended because the plant develops an extensive root system and obtains many of its nutrients through its roots. Root tabs or other substrate fertilizers can also support healthy growth.

The plant can tolerate different lighting conditions, although moderate to high aquarium lighting can encourage stronger and faster growth. CO2 injection is not essential for keeping Amazon Sword healthy, but adding CO2 can promote faster growth and more vigorous development.

Because Amazon Sword can become quite large, its leaves may eventually shade smaller aquarium plants beneath them. Regular maintenance is therefore recommended. Older or oversized leaves can be removed, while new side shoots can be separated and replanted in the substrate to propagate new plants.

Amazon Sword can grow both submersed and emersed. When grown emersed, it can produce attractive small white flowers under suitable conditions.
