Ammonia Test Kit – Accurate Aquarium Water Testing

Keep your aquarium water safe and your fish healthy with the Ammonia Test Kit from Minipura Aqua. Ammonia is one of the most harmful substances that can build up in an aquarium, especially in new tanks, overstocked aquariums, or tanks with excess food and organic waste.

This easy-to-use aquarium ammonia test kit helps fishkeepers in Sri Lanka regularly check ammonia levels and identify potentially dangerous water conditions before they affect fish health. Regular water testing is an important part of maintaining a stable and healthy aquarium environment.

Why Is Ammonia Dangerous in an Aquarium?

Ammonia is produced naturally from fish waste, uneaten fish food, and decomposing organic matter such as dead plant leaves. Because ammonia is invisible, you cannot determine its presence simply by looking at your aquarium water.

In a properly established aquarium, beneficial bacteria in the biological filter convert ammonia into nitrite and then into less harmful nitrate. However, when the aquarium’s biological filtration cannot process the waste effectively, ammonia can accumulate and become toxic to fish.

For a healthy aquarium, the ideal ammonia reading is 0 mg/L (ppm).

Why Test Aquarium Ammonia Levels?

Regular ammonia testing is especially important when:

  • Setting up a new aquarium
  • Adding new fish
  • Starting or changing biological filtration
  • Keeping a heavily stocked aquarium
  • Fish show signs of stress or unusual behavior
  • There has been overfeeding or excess organic waste
  • Performing maintenance after a filter problem

Detecting ammonia early allows you to take corrective action before water quality problems become serious.

What to Do When Ammonia Is Detected

If your aquarium ammonia test shows an elevated reading, take appropriate action based on the test result:

  • Around 0.2 mg/L (ppm): Consider adding a beneficial bacteria or filter booster such as Filter Starter.
  • 0.5–1.0 mg/L (ppm): Perform approximately a 25% water change.
  • Above 1.0 mg/L (ppm): Perform approximately a 50% water change and consider using an appropriate ammonia-removing filter media.

If ammonia is detected, it is also recommended to check other important water parameters such as pH, KH, and nitrite, as these parameters can help you understand the overall condition of your aquarium.

How to Use the Ammonia Test Kit

Using the test kit is simple:

  1. Make sure the test tube is clean.
  2. Add 5 ml of aquarium water to the test tube.
  3. Add 5 drops of Ammonia 1 reagent.
  4. Add 5 drops of Ammonia 2 reagent.
  5. Add 5 drops of Ammonia 3 reagent.
  6. Close the test tube and shake thoroughly.
  7. Wait approximately 10 minutes.
  8. Compare the resulting colour with the colour chart provided with the test kit.

A yellow colour indicates zero ammonia, while any noticeable green colour indicates the presence of ammonia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does one reagent run out before the others?
The reagents are filled to a minimum specified volume, so there may be slight differences in the amount of liquid between bottles. This does not necessarily mean there is a problem with the test kit, and the kit should still provide the number of tests stated on the packaging.

My Ammonia 2 reagent has turned blue. Can I still use it?
Yes. A blue colour in the Ammonia 2 reagent does not affect its performance. For reliable testing, always make sure the test kit is within its expiry date and has been stored appropriately.
