Cryptocoryne parva – Small Water Trumpet
Cryptocoryne parva, commonly known as the Small Water Trumpet, is the smallest species in the Cryptocoryne genus and an excellent choice for planted aquariums, nano tanks, and foreground aquascapes. Native to Sri Lanka, this slow-growing aquatic plant naturally grows along the edges and shallow areas of fast-flowing rivers.
Under aquarium conditions, Cryptocoryne parva usually reaches only around 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) in height, making it ideal for creating a low-growing foreground or a natural transition between your hardscape and substrate. With time, the plant spreads through underground runners and can form a dense, attractive green carpet.
Cryptocoryne parva Aquarium Plant Features
Cryptocoryne parva produces narrow, coarse leaves in medium to dark green shades. Unlike many other Cryptocoryne species, its leaf shape and colour remain relatively stable when aquarium conditions change. With stronger lighting, the leaves tend to spread more horizontally, while lower-light conditions can result in a more upright growth pattern.
This is a very slow-growing aquarium plant, so patience is essential. It may take some time to become established after planting, particularly when moving from an emersed or in-vitro growing form to fully submerged conditions.
How to Grow Cryptocoryne parva
Cryptocoryne parva requires a little more light than many other Cryptocoryne species, although medium lighting is generally sufficient when the plant is positioned in an open area of the aquarium. It benefits greatly from a nutrient-rich substrate and CO₂ supplementation, which can encourage healthier and more consistent growth.
When planting, divide emersed or in-vitro plants into smaller portions and plant them a few centimetres apart. Once established, Cryptocoryne parva gradually develops underground runners and spreads throughout the substrate. Under favourable conditions, it can form a connected foreground carpet in approximately six months, although growth speed can vary depending on lighting, nutrients, CO₂, and other aquarium conditions.
As with other Cryptocoryne species, some initial acclimation may be required after planting. Avoid repeatedly disturbing the plant and allow it time to establish its root system.
Ideal for Nano Aquariums & Aquascaping
Because of its compact size and slow growth, Cryptocoryne parva is an excellent foreground plant for nano aquariums and planted tanks. It also works beautifully around rocks, driftwood, and other hardscape areas where the substrate meets the hardscape.
It can also be grown emersed in paludariums and Wabi-Kusa, where mature plants may produce small inflorescences with a distinctive dark-purple spathe.
