Echinodorus bleheri – Amazon Sword Aquarium Plant

Echinodorus bleheri, commonly known as the Amazon Sword, is one of the most popular and easy-to-grow aquarium plants for freshwater planted tanks. It is also known as Echinodorus paniculatus and is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquascapers.

This large, attractive aquatic plant can grow up to 50–60 cm in height under suitable aquarium conditions. Mature specimens can develop numerous broad green leaves, creating a lush and impressive appearance. Because of its size, Echinodorus bleheri is commonly used as a background or focal plant in larger aquariums.

The Amazon Sword is a relatively undemanding aquarium plant and does not require intensive maintenance. With good lighting, suitable nutrients, and a nutrient-rich substrate, it can establish strong roots and produce new leaves regularly. In larger aquariums, planting it behind rocks or other hardscape elements can create a natural depth and balanced aquascape.

When grown in a CO₂-injected aquarium, Echinodorus bleheri can grow considerably faster. Under strong and healthy growing conditions, you may even notice tiny oxygen bubbles forming on the leaves, indicating active photosynthesis.
