Echinodorus parviflorus ‘Tropica’ – Tropica Sword Plant
Echinodorus parviflorus ‘Tropica’, commonly known as the Tropica Sword Plant, is a compact and attractive aquarium plant that is ideal for nano aquariums, planted tanks, and aquascapes. Unlike many larger sword plants, this variety remains relatively small and grows as a dense, spreading rosette of beautiful medium to dark green leaves.
The cultivar was introduced in 1985 under the name Echinodorus parviflorus ‘Tropica’ and was named after the Tropica nursery in Denmark. It is also sometimes traded under the name Echinodorus mucronatus.
Compact Growth for Aquascaping
In aquarium conditions, Echinodorus ‘Tropica’ usually reaches around 5–10 cm in height, with a maximum size of approximately 15 cm high and 33 cm wide. Its relatively compact growth makes it particularly useful where a smaller sword plant is preferred.
The leaves are coarse-textured, medium to dark green and slightly hammered in appearance. Their narrow, rounded shape with a distinct tip gives the plant an attractive and unique appearance. Because of its texture and form, it creates an excellent contrast against fine-leaved aquarium plants.
Growing Echinodorus ‘Tropica’ in an Aquarium
This variety grows more slowly and stays smaller than many other Echinodorus grisebachii forms. It has a moderate light requirement and can adapt well to a variety of planted aquarium setups.
For strong and healthy growth, provide:
- Moderate aquarium lighting
- A nutrient-rich aquarium substrate
- Regular nutrient supplementation
- CO₂ injection for improved growth
- Stable water parameters
- A temperature of approximately 22–28°C
When purchased, the plant is often grown in its emersed form. These terrestrial leaves are generally larger and grow faster. After planting underwater, the existing emersed leaves may gradually turn yellow and deteriorate while new, shorter submerged leaves develop. This is a normal transition and the older leaves can be removed once they begin to decay.
Ideal for Nano Aquariums & Planted Tanks
With its compact size and attractive rosette growth, Echinodorus parviflorus ‘Tropica’ works particularly well as a solitary focal plant in nano aquariums. It can also be planted in small groups in larger aquariums to create a natural foreground or midground arrangement.
Its broader, textured leaves provide an attractive contrast when placed next to fine-leaved or grass-like aquarium plants, making it a versatile choice for planted aquariums and aquascaping.
