Fissidens fontanus – Phoenix Moss
Fissidens fontanus, commonly known as Phoenix Moss, is a beautiful aquatic moss admired for its delicate, feathery leaves and deep green colour. It is an excellent choice for aquascaping enthusiasts who want to create natural-looking underwater landscapes with detailed textures and lush greenery.
This aquatic moss naturally attaches to driftwood, rocks, and other aquarium hardscape using tiny root-like structures called rhizoids. As it grows, it forms compact, rounded cushions or attractive lawn-like patches, making it ideal for creating detailed layouts in planted aquariums, nano tanks, and nature-style aquascapes.
The Phoenix Moss variant features small leaflets measuring approximately 3–5 mm. Compared with larger forms of Fissidens fontanus, it has a darker green colour, a finer appearance, and a more compact growth habit due to its tendency to branch more readily. These characteristics make it particularly suitable for decorating aquarium driftwood and rocks with a soft, natural moss effect.
Whether you are designing a miniature aquascape or adding texture to an established planted tank, Fissidens fontanus is a distinctive choice for creating a detailed and natural underwater environment.
